Imagined Italy

Spring digital exhibition
March – 15 June 2026

The digital exhibitions of ItalianOpera are presented in English in order to reach an international audience and to frame the generative works of the collection within a broader curatorial context.

This exhibition brings together four works from the artistic project Varrone & Romano, organized as a compact visual path devoted to urban landscapes and atmospheres of Italian memory.

These images are not documentary views. They evoke recognizable places without reducing them to topographic description. Cities, lagoons, coastal roads and streets become spaces of memory filtered through a pictorial sensibility that dialogues with the long tradition of Italian landscape painting while using the tools of contemporary generative art.

Curatorial note

The works presented here do not portray Italy as a touristic catalogue but as an emotional and cultural construction. Each image emerges from a tension between recognition and transformation: Genoa appears as an intimate and almost private space; the Venetian lagoon becomes a field of light and suspension; the Ligurian Riviera transforms into a surface of reflections and maritime memory; Rome emerges as a historical urban stage where different temporal layers coexist.

The result is an imagined Italy — not because it is arbitrary, but because it is recomposed through a poetic logic. The project of Varrone & Romano uses generative systems to produce images that seem to belong to a long sedimented tradition of painting while remaining openly contemporary in their tools and conceptual framework.

Exhibited works

The exhibition presents four views evoking different atmospheres of the Italian peninsula: port cities, lagoons, coastal landscapes and historical urban scenes. Each image belongs to the ItalianOpera Generative Collection and is attributed to the artistic project Varrone & Romano.

A small exhibition, deliberately so

Imagined Italy presents only four works. This choice is intentional: rather than accumulating images, the exhibition proposes a concise visual path designed to suggest an idea of Italy through a small number of coherent views. The limited scale does not diminish the exhibition; on the contrary, it reinforces its character as a focused visual dossier and a curatorial experiment.

This first exhibition opens a cycle of thematic digital exhibitions devoted to the images of Varrone & Romano, organized following principles similar to those of a museum: title, exhibition period, poster image, selection of works and a structured reading path.
