An International Career
After studying at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, Quaranta began his career as an assistant to production designers and architects. In a short time, he became one of the most sought-after designers for opera and cinema, working in prestigious theaters such as La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Vienna State Opera.
His designs are distinguished by their ability to combine visual spectacle with historical precision. For major titles in the operatic repertoire – from Aida to Tosca, Don Carlo to Carmen – he often personally oversaw the costume design, creating stagings of great theatrical impact.
The Oscar for "A Room with a View"
In 1987, Quaranta won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction for James Ivory's film "A Room with a View." The film, set in early 20th-century Italy, was praised for the refinement of its settings and its accurate historical reconstruction, which contributed decisively to the film's international success.
Between Theater, Cinema, and Design
In addition to cinema and opera, Quaranta worked in advertising, design, and the organization of major cultural events. He designed sets for musicals, exhibitions, and multimedia shows, demonstrating extraordinary artistic versatility.
Throughout his long career, he received numerous international prizes and awards, helping to spread the prestige of Italian production design worldwide.
