COMPOSERS

Life

Trained during the final phase of Romanticism, his artistic maturity was fully expressed during the post-unification Realism period, extending into the Fin de siècle climate where Verismo and Decadentism coexisted.

Born in Vicenza in 1852, he grew up in a lively environment receptive to music. After initial studies in his native city, he soon moved to Milan, where he had the opportunity to engage with orchestras, theaters, and a musical reality in continuous ferment.

Aneddoto

A family of musicians

In the Coronaro house, music was a family affair: in addition to Gaetano, his brothers Antonio (organist for decades at the Vicenza Cathedral) and Gellio were also composers. A rare case where three brothers chose the same path and supported each other.

Works

La Creola, a drama in three acts to a libretto by Eugenio and Maria Torelli-Vallier, debuted at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna on November 27, 1878, bringing Coronaro's name to public attention thanks to firm theatrical writing and an effective sense of orchestral color.

Il malacarne, a lyric drama in three acts to a libretto by Stefano Interdonato, was staged at the Teatro Grande in Brescia on January 20, 1894. The opera shows a sharp scenic taste, attention to choral dynamics, and pages of strong impact for the protagonists.

Un curioso accidente, a lyric comedy inspired by Goldoni, was presented in Turin in 1903, with a lighter touch and special care for ensemble numbers and character drawing.

Enoch Arden (1905), inspired by Tennyson's poem, remained at the score stage without reaching the scene, but witnesses Coronaro's interest in broad narrative subjects and incisive musical declamation.

La signora di Challant, to a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa based on his own play, did not reach performance but reveals the author's attraction to complex female figures and plots with strong dramatic appeal.
