Life
Trained at the height of Romanticism, his long career led him to reach full artistic maturity during the post-unification Realism period.
Born in Naples in 1819, Giuseppe Conte was active throughout his life in his native city. He grew up in the cultural environment of the Neapolitan Conservatory and passionately dedicated himself to composition, finding his primary vocation in musical theater. At the same time, he was an esteemed teacher, contributing to the training of young musicians.
He composed operas performed in various theaters in the city and was also appreciated as an author of sacred and chamber music. His career, carried out mainly locally, reflects the intense artistic ferment of Naples in the 19th century. He died in the same city in 1894.

Briciole di storia
The first Congress of Italian Scientists
In Pisa, with the permission of Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany, the First Congress of Italian Scientists was held in 1841. Although officially a scientific convention, the event took on an enormous political and patriotic significance. For the first time in centuries, intellectuals and academics from the different states into which the peninsula was divided—with the exception of those from the Papal States, whom the Pope forbade to participate—met freely to discuss. The meeting became a symbol: common belonging to Italian culture and science was an anticipation of that political unity that patriots dreamed of, showing that beyond borders, a nation already existed.
