Briciole di storia
The tragic sacrifice of the Bandiera brothers
The brothers Attilio and Emilio Bandiera, officers in the Austrian navy but fervent Mazzinians, attempted to spark an insurrection in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Betrayed by a companion, they landed in Calabria with a small group of followers, but found not a people in revolt, but the Bourbon gendarmerie waiting for them, and were easily captured and tried. On July 25, 1844, in the Vallone di Rovito near Cosenza, the Bandiera brothers and seven of their companions were executed by firing squad while shouting "Long live Italy!". Their failure and martyrdom, similar to those of Pisacane years later, deeply shook liberal public opinion, transforming them from victims into romantic heroes and symbols of the blood tribute paid by youth to the cause of unity.
