COMPOSERS

Life

Trained in the heart of the Baroque, his mature career took place in the Late Baroque phase, a transitional era that saw the conclusion of the seventeenth-century style and the emergence of the first rationalist ferments that would lead to the birth of Arcadia.

Born in Modena in 1635, Giuseppe Colombi trained as a violinist and soon entered the service of the Este court. His career developed in close connection with the city's musical life, which in the seventeenth century was one of the most vibrant centers of Italian instrumental music. He became known for his skills as a violinist and for his compositions, characterized by melodic elegance and structural clarity.

In 1674 he was appointed court chapel master, a position that allowed him to direct Este musical activities and write both sacred and instrumental music. His works include ballets, symphonies, and sonatas, testifying to the vitality of the Modenese instrumental school. He died in his hometown in 1694.
