Lelio Colista was born in Rome in 1629 and was trained in a cultured and refined musical environment. He became known as a virtuoso of the lute and chitarrone, instruments he mastered with extreme elegance. In 1664 he was appointed master of the Cappella Giulia in St. Peter's, and subsequently held prestigious roles in Roman musical life.
His fame reached major Italian centers, so much so that Arcangelo Corelli considered him a reference model. His production includes oratorios and instrumental music, especially sonatas and symphonies for various ensembles. He died in Rome in 1680.
