COMPOSERS

Life

His training took place at a fertile cultural crossroads where Arcadia, Rococo, and the Enlightenment intersected, while his long career led him to reach maturity in an era in which, alongside the Rococo style and Enlightenment thought, the new and more severe ideals of Neoclassicism emerged.

Born in Naples around 1712, Gioacchino Cocchi was trained in the vibrant Neapolitan musical school. His career took him to Venice, where he achieved his first successes with comic operas applauded by the public. His fame spread rapidly, allowing him to also work in London, where his compositions were performed at the King’s Theatre, and in Lisbon, at the Teatro do Bairro Alto.

His works, distinguished by melodic freshness and a lively theatrical sense, marked an important chapter in the development of European comic opera. He was also esteemed as a teacher and chapel master. He spent his final years in Venice, where he died around 1796.
