Life

Trained during the period of Realism, his mature career unfolded in the complex climate of the Fin de siècle, an era where the poetics of Verismo, Decadentism, and Symbolism intertwined and coexisted.

Born in Bologna in 1857, Filippo Clementi dedicated himself to musical theater, composing two lyrical operas, both to his own libretto. In 1890 he debuted at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna with La pellegrina, conducted by Rodolfo Ferrari and performed by Adelina Stehle and Antonio Cotogni. The opera enjoyed a fair amount of success and also reached the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.

In 1893 he composed Vandea, again performed in Bologna, but this time the opera did not meet with public favor. After this experience, Clementi wrote no further operas and his musical career was cut short prematurely. He died in Rome in 1909.
