COMPOSERS

Life

His training took place in the heart of the Fin de siècle, an era where Verismo, Decadentism, and Symbolism intertwined, while his long mature career unfolded in a twentieth century marked by the revolution of Futurism and subsequent currents.

Born in Castel del Piano in 1881, Luigi Cirenei graduated from Pesaro in composition and band conducting in 1901. He joined the 89th Infantry Regiment as music director in 1911. In 1925, he took the lead of the Carabinieri Band, which he profoundly reformed, bringing it to international prestige.

During his tenure, he undertook tours in Europe and America, receiving great acclaim. In 1931 he was appointed a member of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, and in 1936 he became Inspector General for Army Music, tasked with reforming all Italian military musical bodies. He also had professional relations with Albania, composing national anthems and designing a music high school in Tirana.

He died in Rome in 1947. His figure is indissolubily linked to the march La Fedelissima, which has become the musical symbol of the Carabinieri.
