COMPOSERS

Life

His entire career, from training to his premature passing, is situated entirely within the period of Neoclassicism.

Born in Venice in 1761 into a noble family, he studied violin, cello, and fortepiano. In 1789 he composed the fable Ati e Cibele, followed by Pimmalione (1790) and Il ratto di Proserpina (1791). He also wrote a double bass concerto for the young virtuoso Dragonetti.

From 1791 he lived in London, where he established himself as a singing teacher, violinist, and singer. In 1795 he re-presented his Ati e Cibele enriched by coreographies by Noverre. In 1799–1800 he also performed as a fortepianist, expanding his fame.

In partnership with Tebaldo Monzani, he founded the Opera Music Warehouse in London, publishing English and Italian vocal works and editing editions of Mozart's works. He himself arranged Mozart's symphonies for a small orchestra, facilitating their performance at the King’s Theatre. He died in Bath in 1805, leaving behind a varied production and an important contribution to the dissemination of Mozart in England.

Aneddoto

Mozart for small ensembles

Cimador made Mozart's symphonies accessible to the London public by arranging them for flute and strings, anticipating the chamber-music success of the Salzburg composer.

Works

Among his compositions we recall Ati e Cibele (1789, Venice; 1795, London), Pimmalione (1790, Venice), Il ratto di Proserpina (1791, Venice), and a double bass concerto written for Dragonetti. His publishing activity distributed Mozart's arias, duets, and symphonies in chamber versions that enjoyed wide circulation.

Transparency, what an idea!

In his writing on fiefs, Dragonetti launched a proposal to startle the eighteenth century: to make laws and debates public so that the people could truly inform themselves. Open government avant la lettre!
