Life
Trained fully in the style of the mature Baroque, his career unfolded in an era of transition, reaching maturity in the Late Baroque phase which saw the emergence of the new rationalist ideals of Arcadia.
Sebastiano Cherici was born in Pistoia in 1647. He completed his studies in Bologna as a pupil of Giovanni Paolo Colonna, one of the most esteemed masters of the era. This training introduced him to the vibrant Bolognese musical environment, where he matured a style attentive to counterpoint and the emerging melodic taste.
He was active in Ferrara, where he composed and conducted stage works, and in Pistoia, his hometown, where he returned in later years. His works include oratorios, masses, and theatrical music, which testified to his versatility and ability to move between different genres.
He died in Pistoia in 1704, leaving a production that enjoyed good distribution in the cities where he operated, though it remained linked to local circuits.
