His entire creative arc, from training to full maturity, unfolded consistently within the period of Mannerism, of which he was an exponent in the field of sacred music.
Bartolomeo Carteri was born in Verona around 1542. He was a composer, singer, and instrumentalist, expert in the cornett, lute, and viola da gamba. He entered the Accademia Filarmonica of Verona on December 31, 1564, and remained there throughout his life, distinguishing himself as a point of reference for the city's music.
A portrait attributed to Felice Brusasorzi, dated around 1580 and preserved at the Castelvecchio Museum, depicts him with a music book open to the madrigal Pianta cara e gentil, attributed to him. He participated in Veronese artistic and literary initiatives, such as the collection of madrigals in honor of Laura Peverara, the famous Mantuan singer.
He died in Verona in 1614, leaving a trace in the Venetian madrigalist tradition, with works appreciated for their elegance and poetic sensitivity.
