COMPOSERS

Life

His entire artistic arc, from his formative period to full maturity, took place consistently within the early 18th century, in a context where the solid structure of Arcadia merged with the new elegance of the Rococo.

Born in Udine around 1690, Giuseppe Maria Buini established himself as a composer of operas and intermezzi in the lively Venetian theatrical scene. His compositions, often intended for small and medium-sized theaters, contributed to the spread of the comic and light taste typical of the time.

His production was also performed in Friuli, where he carried out musical activities until his death in 1739. Buini is remembered as one of the protagonists of the Friulian and Venetian theatrical tradition.

Applauded intermezzi

His intermezzi were often repeated thanks to the enthusiasm of the public, who appreciated their freshness and liveliness.

Works

Buini composed various operas and intermezzi, performed in Venice and other Italian cities. Among his scores, some have come down to us and document his brilliant and communicative style.

The repertoire, although intended for small ensembles, is distinguished by its attention to theatrical rhythm and stage delivery.

Briciole di storia

The vices of the Italians

In the middle of the 18th century, Pietro Calepio wrote a Letter on Italian Customs that was translated into French and published in 1728 in the prestigious Bibliothèque Italique. In this text, which became very well known, Calepio did not limit himself to describing Italy in general, but clearly and sincerely denounced various vices of Italian society. Among his harshest criticisms was the poor functioning of educational institutions and, in particular, the idleness in which most of the nobility lived, considered the cause of their dissoluteness. He also denounced the low consideration given to the female role.
