Giovanni Bottesini was born in Crema on December 22, 1821. From boyhood, he showed extraordinary musical talent that led him to dedicate himself to the double bass, an instrument then little considered for solo use. His technical skill and virtuosity soon made him known as "the Paganini of the double bass."

Among his activities was also the conducting of orchestras, including interpretations of works by Verdi, of whom he was a friend and collaborator.
