Life
Formed in the midst of mature Romanticism, his career led him to reach full artistic maturity in the post-unification Realism period, extending into the era of Decadentism.
Luigi Bottazzo was born in Piazzola sul Brenta on July 9, 1845. From a young age, he showed a strong musical talent, which led him to dedicate himself passionately to the study of the organ and composition. Moving to Padua, he consolidated his training and began a long career primarily linked to liturgical music.
Aneddoto
Loyalty to "Il Santo"
Bottazzo remained the organist at the Basilica of Saint Anthony (the "Santo") for over fifty years, so much so that many Paduans considered him a true institution of the church and the city.Works
Among his most widespread compositions were masses for multiple voices and motets, performed regularly during Paduan liturgies. His writing, elegant and sober, responded to the needs of the celebration and enhanced the acoustics of sacred spaces.
He also composed significant educational works, including manuals for learning the organ and singing, tools that trained hundreds of students. These texts were reprinted several times and used in numerous religious institutes.
His collections of pieces for organ stood out for their formal clarity and ease of execution, qualities that made them precious for generations of organists.

The defeat of Mentana
In the autumn of 1867, Giuseppe Garibaldi attempted for the last time to conquer Rome with a forceful action. At the head of an army of volunteers, he invaded Papal territories, but on November 3, he was intercepted and defeated at Mentana by Pontifical troops, joined by a French expeditionary corps sent by Napoleon III. Decisive for the defeat were the new French breech-loading rifles, the Chassepots, which, as General De Failly wrote, "performed wonders." The rout at Mentana marked the end of the epic of the "Red Shirts" and the tragic conclusion of the dream of liberating Rome through a popular insurrection. From that moment, Italy understood that the "Roman Question" could only be resolved either through diplomacy or the royal army.
