COMPOSERS

Life

His training took place at a fertile cultural crossroads where Rococo and Enlightenment intersected, while his full artistic maturity was expressed in the new taste of Neoclassicism.

Giovanni Battista Borghi was born in Imola in 1738 and received a solid musical education thanks to the teaching of Padre Martini in Bologna. From a young age, he distinguished himself for his talent in writing sacred and chamber music.

Aneddoto

The Bolognese oratorio

His 1773 oratorio Il Tobia was a great success in Bologna, confirming him as one of Padre Martini's most promising pupils.

Works

Among Giovanni Battista Borghi's works, his sacred compositions are particularly remembered. The most famous is the oratorio Il Tobia, performed in Bologna in 1773 and much appreciated for its balance between dramatic intensity and musical clarity.

During his years in Imola, he wrote numerous masses, motets, and psalms intended for the liturgical repertoire of the cathedral. He also composed instrumental pieces and sonatas, which are less known today but show his talent for merging the Italian style with chamber forms.

The Academy of Fists

Giovanni Battista Biffi was a prominent exponent of the Lombard Enlightenment and was among the founders of the famous Accademia dei Pugni (Academy of Fists) in Milan around 1760, together with Cesare Beccaria and the Verri brothers. The name of that Academy derived from the fact that the members were so passionate and vehement in their intellectual discussions that they often literally came to blows (fists) to defend their progressive theses.
