Life

Trained at the dawn of the new century, his long and prestigious career, from formation to full maturity, took place entirely within the Baroque period, of which he was an important theorist and chronicler.

Severo Bonini was born in Florence in 1582 and entered the Vallombrosan order at a very young age. From the beginning, he showed a keen predisposition for music, which he cultivated under the guidance of Luca Bati, one of the greatest Florentine masters of the era. Having become an organist, he held positions in various churches, eventually reaching the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

His work was distinguished by the extensive production of madrigals, arias, and motets, which reveal the transition from traditional polyphonic forms to the new monodic expressiveness. His theoretical activity was equally relevant: the treatise Discorsi e regole sovra la musica, published between 1649 and 1659, is today a precious source for understanding musical practice and the evolution of style in the seventeenth century.

He died in Florence in 1663, leaving a lasting testimony both as an author and as an attentive observer of the musical life of his time.

Aneddoto

The musician monk

Bonini, despite living in a monastery, was known for inviting musicians and students to discuss new musical trends, creating a lively cultural center within the convent walls.

Works

Bonini's production includes numerous madrigals, spiritual arias, and motets, which also spread beyond Florence. These compositions reveal a particular attention to the relationship between word and music, reflecting the search for a more direct and affective language.

Of great value remains his treatise Discorsi e regole sovra la musica, a collection of observations, rules, and reflections documenting the evolution of Italian music in the seventeenth century. In it, one finds references to new compositional techniques and direct testimonies about the authors of the time, making it a source of primary importance for modern scholars.
