COMPOSERS

Life

Trained at the height of Romanticism, his long and prestigious career as a critic and composer led him to reach full artistic maturity in the post-unification Realism period, representing a key figure of the Milanese Scapigliatura.

Girolamo Alessandro Biaggi was born in Calcio in 1819. After a thorough musical training, he embarked on a path that led him to combine the activity of composer with that of critic and teacher. His versatility made him one of the most authoritative voices of his time in the Italian musical panorama.

The pen and the keyboard

Biaggi used to pass naturally from the piano to the writing desk: composing a piece and immediately afterward jotting down critical reflections on the value of musical art.

Works

Biaggi's works include vocal and instrumental compositions of various genres. He wrote chamber pieces, piano pieces, and pages for voice and piano, intended for a cultured and sensitive audience.

Alongside his compositional activity, his theoretical and critical writings were of great importance. He published essays and articles in magazines and periodicals, addressing technical and aesthetic questions with competence and clarity. His interventions helped shape the Italian musical debate of the 19th century.

His most lasting work remains that of a critic, which made him a point of reference for scholars and musicians.
