COMPOSERS

Life

His training took place at a fertile cultural crossroads where Arcadia, Rococo, and Enlightenment intersected, while his long career led him to reach maturity in an era where, alongside the Rococo style and Enlightenment thought, the new and more severe ideals of Neoclassicism were established.

Coriolano Biacchi, born around 1720, received his musical training in Italy and distinguished himself from a young age for his versatility in composition. His career took place largely in Florence, where he received significant appointments and consolidated his reputation as an esteemed author.

Aneddoto

Court favor

Biacchi was also appreciated in court circles, where he was called upon several times to direct music for solemn ceremonies, receiving praise and recognition.

Works

Biacchi composed several theatrical works that gained resonance in Florence and other Italian centers. Among his known titles are works dealing with mythological and historical subjects, in which he combined theatricality with musical refinement.

He also wrote numerous sacred compositions, including masses and motets, which found a place in the main churches of Florence. His liturgical works, often crafted for solemn holidays, reveal a musical language capable of evoking devotion and magnificence.

His production also includes instrumental pages, designed for chamber ensembles and to enrich local musical occasions. Thanks to these works, Biacchi earned a stable place in 18th-century Florentine musical life.

Briciole di storia

The Countess in flames

When Countess Cornelia Zangheri Bandi died in Cesena under terrifying circumstances and her body inexplicably caught fire, many invoked the devil to explain the mystery. Giuseppe Bianchini was tasked with investigating the case. In his 1743 report, applying his scientific rigor, he categorically excluded any supernatural cause and was one of the first investigators to theorize a modern hypothesis: spontaneous combustion. Bianchini advanced the idea that internal heat had ignited the fire, demonstrating a rationalist and certainly avant-garde approach for that era.
