Life
Trained at the height of Verdian Romanticism, his mature career took place in the complex climate of the Fin de siècle, a transition era in which the poetics of Realism and the new sensitivity of Decadentism coexisted.
Born in Cavarzere, Tommaso Benvenuti showed very precocious musical talent. A probable pupil of Antonio Buzzolla, he composed a Hymn to Pius IX as a teenager and set several cantos of the Divine Comedy to music. At just eighteen, he attempted musical theater with Valenzia Candiani.

A missed Scala
La Stella di Toledo was supposed to reach La Scala, but it was replaced by a French opera that proved to be a fiasco—an episode that left Benvenuti bitter.Works
Theatrical works include Adriana Lecouvreur (Milan, 1857), Guglielmo Shakespeare (Parma, 1861), La Stella di Toledo (Milan, 1864), Il Falconiere (Venice, 1878), Beatrice di Svevia (Venice, 1890), and Le Baruffe Chiozzotte (Florence, 1895).
He also composed romances, duets, melodies, and rhapsodies, including Rapsodia greca, Rapsodia sarda, and Il Ritorno. He also wrote a Gradual for alto and chorus, taken from the Messa in gloria of 1883.

Discovering the Italian mountains
On October 23, 1863, at the Castello del Valentino in Turin, a group of mountaineers and scientists, led by Finance Minister Quintino Sella, founded the Italian Alpine Club (CAI). The idea had been born a few months earlier during an ascent of Monviso. The goal was to promote knowledge and exploration of the Alps, which until then had been the almost exclusive domain of British mountaineers. The CAI was not just a sports association, but a powerful tool for cultural unification: through the construction of shelters, the publication of guides, and the study of the territory, it contributed to creating a national feeling and letting Italians discover a vast natural heritage that they felt, for the first time, was truly theirs.
