Life

His training took place in a crucial era of transition, in which the final glimmers of Neoclassicism and the nascent sensitivity of Romanticism coexisted—a style in which his artistic maturity would later be fully expressed.

Adolfo Bassi was born in Naples in 1800 and embarked on a career as a tenor, establishing himself through the quality of his voice and stage interpretation. He moved to Trieste, where he played a central role in the city's musical life.

Aneddoto

A tenor in Trieste

During a performance in Trieste, Bassi enjoyed conducting the orchestra while singing, surprising the audience and musicians with his dual ability.

Works

Among Adolfo Bassi's works are Il calunniatore punito and I quattro fratelli mendicanti, successfully performed in Trieste.

He also composed sacred and vocal pieces that enriched the local repertoire.

Briciole di storia

Repression and the exile of patriots

After the defeat of the uprisings, a harsh repression was unleashed in all Italian states in 1823, as sovereigns, supported by Austria, established a climate of police terror. Special courts sentenced hundreds of patriots who had participated in the insurrections to death, to hard prison—such as in the Spielberg in Moravia—or to exile. Exile itself became a crucial phenomenon: thousands of intellectuals, soldiers, and conspirators fled, especially to Paris, London, or Switzerland. There, they came into contact with the most advanced ideas of European liberalism, creating an international opposition network and laying the foundations for future, better-organized struggles for independence.
