Balbi's activity was intense in the field of sacred music, with masses and motets intended for the chapels where he worked as a master. These works were distinguished by the skillful use of counterpoint and textual clarity.
Alongside his sacred production, he wrote madrigals that were published and circulated, confirming his place in the liveliest musical currents of late 16th-century Venice.

The Giant's Prank
When the sculptor Giambologna completed his magnificent Fountain of Neptune in Bologna, the ecclesiastical authorities, in the height of the Counter-Reformation, forced him to reduce the size of the god's genitals, judged to be too scandalous. The artist officially obeyed. But he took a brilliant and mocking revenge. He designed the statue in such a way that, observing it from a specific dark tile in the square—known today as the "stone of shame"—the thumb of Neptune's outstretched left hand aligns perfectly with the groin, creating the optical illusion of an erect phallus. In this way, the "Giant," as the Bolognese call it, became not only the symbol of the city but also an eternal monument against censorship.
