Ippolito Baccusi was born in Mantua around 1550. Trained in the environment of the Venetian school, he distinguished himself for his ability in counterpoint. He worked in Venice, Mantua, and Verona, cities that deeply marked his career.

Baccusi published several books of madrigals for five and six voices, which were widely circulated and reprinted between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. These collections show his ability to unite contrapuntal rigor and poetic sensitivity.
He also composed masses and motets, in which polyphonic writing reached great expressive intensity. His works were printed in Venice, then a leading publishing center, and circulated widely throughout Northern Italy.
