HERBERT HOWELLSIn 1912 he won an open scholarship to the Royal College of Music. Ill-health cut short his first appointment as sub-organist at Salisbury Cathedral, but in 1920 he started teaching composition at the Royal College of Music and continued until the age of eighty. From 1936 to 1962 he was director of music at St Paul's Girls' School, succeeding Holst. In 1950 he was appointed King Edward VII professor of music at London University. He was made a CBE in 1953 and a Companion of Honour in 1972. Concerto pour orchestre à cordes
