"By the time of its arrival at Modena in the early 19th century the frontispiece of this particular symphonic manuscript had been removed. The work was first catalogued at Modena by the Modena librarian Catelani in 1851/2. The date of composition for this symphony as proposed by Ludwig Koechel (who simply obtained it from the thematic catalogue of Mozart as being the summer of 1788) does not correspond with reality. In effect, this symphony must already have been in the music archives of Bonn at the time of the last detailed inventory of the musical assets of the chapel (held on 8th May 1784) and was therefore composed by the Kapellmeister Andrea Luchesi prior to his known visit to Vienna in April 1783. The ‘Jupiter’ symphony was NOT born in Vienna but was born in Bonn. Modern editors of the Koechel catalogue today recognise the existence at Modena of only 8 ‘Mozart’ symphonic manuscripts from the Bonn music archives which are known to have been evacuated from Bonn in 1784 but have so far failed to inform music lovers of the existence of this particular manuscript at Modena. (For example, in the Koechel 6th Edition of 1974 this Modena version is not even referred to. But the presence of this very manuscript in Bonn on 8th May 1784 (at which time it was simply regarded as an anonymous symphony rather than normally attributing it as an unsigned work to the current Kapellmeister (a normal and standard practice in all music chapels of the 18th century across Europe) is one reason why it later became a ‘Mozart’ symphony. In actual fact this is a symphony supplied TO Mozart. Thus, by summer of 1788 (i.e. around 5 years after its true composition date) it was privately supplied to Mozart and he, Mozart, entered it into his thematic catalogue as his very own. In fact, it is a symphony composed by Andrea Luchesi.
